The Memorial Chamber at the base of the Peace Tower is a sacred space that honours the many Canadians who lost their lives while in military service. The Chamber houses six Books of Remembrance, including this particular one that lists all 2,199 merchant seamen who lost their lives in re-supply missions in the First and Second World Wars. Each morning at 11 o'clock, an honorary page-turning ceremony takes place, which allows each page in every book to appear at least once per calendar year. During the busy tourist season there isn't much time or space for reflection in the 'chapel', but the strong sense of serenity and overwhelming loss cause goosebumps nonetheless.
