Theme Day: Wood

About a year ago, we purchased a few items from Gendron Antiques in Stittsville, including some antique wooden beer crates. They really do have an amazing selection of high quality reproduction furniture and antiques: old church pews transformed into hall benches, church windows found new life as doors on a bookshelf made from weathered barn wood. These are just a couple of fine examples. Regarding the Dawes Brewery wooden beer crate, it's only now that I discover what a piece of history we have! The iconic brewery in Lachine, Quebec was named after Thomas Dawes and had a humble beginning in 1811, making it one of Canada's oldest breweries. Because of harsh financial times 140 years later, the brewery was sold in 1952. All that remains are the 800+ museum pieces, many pieces of advertising memorabilia as well as these old wooden crates that date back to the '20's or '30's.

Right Place, Right Time...

for a photo opp that is! For this driver on Stittsville's Main Street it was a different story. The driver wasn't paying attention – obviously – when he decided to summit this 3-foot-high snowbank and take out the light standard. As it was only 11 o'clock in the morning, one would only hope alcohol wasn't involved, and as he was talking to the officer with animated hand movements, he didn't suffer any sudden ailment at the wheel. Maybe his cell phone was ringing and 'pulled over' to take the call? It's luck that there wasn't a pedestrian on the sidewalk, is all I can say.

Trans-Canada Trail

This may look like just an ordinary walking path, however it is far from it. Part of the world's longest network of trails, the Trans-Canada Trail, when complete, will span 22,000 kilometres through 1,000 communities and link 33 million Canadians. It is an avenue for experiencing the diverse landscape and rich history Canada has to offer. This particular portion runs through Stittsville and is dedicated to A.W. (Tony) Bryant, a tireless Charter Member of the Nepean-Kanata Rotary Club who was responsible for the development of the Trans-Canada Trail from Stittsville to Carleton Place, some 26 kilometres away.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road

School starts back in one week (8 days, 12 hours and 46 minutes actually as of this post). We were delighted when my youngest son (shown here) was invited to his good friend's Birthday Party at Karter's Korners in Stittsville, where he could rekindle friendships after the busy summer months. They all have grown up so much it seems! The kids were obviously quite excited to get behind the wheel of these battery-powered quads and let loose. Thank goodness it'll be another 11 years before they can even attempt to get their learners' permits, as their driving skills are, let's just say, a tad scary. Yikes!
