The End of an Era
After serving the francophone community in Vanier-Ottawa for 102 years, Saint Charles Church will hold its last mass tomorrow morning at 11 am. It is difficult for you to see, but the notice board to the left of the main doors remains empty. The closure comes as a surprise to many of the locals who attest to the Church's popularity and not strictly on Sunday mornings, either. At the peak of St. Charles' popularity in 1960, there were over 11,000 members including those belonging to the male-exclusive society l'Ordre de Jacques-Cartier. Until its disbanding in 1965, this was an elite group of French-speaking civil servant Catholics who were devoted to promoting and upholding French Canadian society.
