Peeking In
Yesterday we were looking out, today we're peeking in.... Yes , this photo is again from Pinhey's Point in Dunrobin. When I lifted my little guy up to the window we saw a lot of – newish – snowshoes as well as some other varied artifacts. Not as exciting as any daydreamer would wish, unfortunately.
BUT what I DO find interesting, is the rock used to build such homes and out-buildings. As it turns out, the area of Ottawa-Gatineau was once (okay, 510 million years ago) near the present day equator and therefore a tropical climate. Because of this, the shale and limestone layers are rich in marine fossils including coral, cephalopods and really funky stromatolites. You can find out some more info here, courtesy of the Museum of Nature. FYI: the hills from where these stones were taken, were once upon a time as high as the Himilayas!

I like everything about this photo! The stones are beautiful and round windows are so unusual they're always a treat to see. Wonderful geology lesson too! :)
