Vimy Ridge Day
Regardless of the drizzle and grey skies this morning, 8,000 people gathered – including these young sea cadets – at the National War Memorial to attend a ceremony honouring the 3,598 fallen Canadian soldiers – and the 100,000 others – who, on this day back in 1917, claimed victory at the Battle for Vimy Ridge in France. Among those who made heartfelt addresses were Governor-General Michaëlle Jean and Prime Minister Stephen Harper who said, "Fearlessness in war and selflessness in peace defined our young nation in the eyes of the world." The solemn ceremony included a 21-gun salute, a fly-over of fighter jets, and ended with the release of peace doves. Mention was made as well, of WWI veteran John Babcock, Canada's final link to this honourable and brave generation who recently passed away at the age of 109.
