Old School
In more ways than one, I find myself wishing for my family a simple life – one similar to those folks who would have lived in the rural surroundings of this 1886 one-room schoolhouse in Kanata, a suburb of Ottawa. Imagine the kids trudging miles through the pure, untouched snow to get to this school, where a fire would be lit (if one of the families provided enough wood!) and stoked throughout the day in attempts to dry out their clothes so as they could make the trip back home without catching a cold.... A school where maybe a dozen kids of all ages would want to attend because they didn't necessarily want a life on the farm, even though only a small percentage of them would realize this dream..... A school where kids would play pick-up sticks or the piano during a recess.... A school where the children were on the same rung of the social ladder and weren't mocked because of the clothes they wore or the things they didn't have... Although a hard life, those children led a full life knowing about responsibility and the importance of working together. Yes, sometimes I wonder if all our technology has been for the better, especially when looking at a one-room schoolhouse.... ?
