RCMP and the Musical Ride
Imagine the Wild West – Anarchy, Cowboys, Looters, The Gold Rush. Back in 1874, along came the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) – literally!– to establish peace and some semblance of lawfulness to Canada's newly acquired western provinces. During the long journey across the country, to break from the monotony and to provide entertainment, the Musical Ride was born.
In 1939, this building was erected at the Rockcliffe Stables and Musical Ride Centre to honour the achievements of the said RCMP. Performances of the Musical Ride can be seen across the country but you are welcome throughout the year to visit the centre and tour stables here in Ottawa. http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/mr-ce/index-eng.htm
The horses themselves are a mix of black Hanoverian broodmares and stallions, bred for their colour, size, temperament and substance. As there are quite often more horses than needed for RCMP training, they auction them off. If you happen to be looking for a horse, you may want to look here: http://www.rcmp-f.ca/events/auction.php
