Drink This, Take That!
Yesterday while at the Billings Estate, we viewed an exhibit on the birth of marketing medicine. Mainly the items presented were from late 19th century, promoting cures for everything – from dysentery to cholera to cancer – to everyone of all ages. The tonic shown here, is aimed at a woman's ailments, primarily for the nerves. Looks like whiskey to me!!! Forget the tonic, perhaps you'd prefer Dr. Clark's Wonderful Little Red Pills?
DTCA (Direct-to-Consumer Advertising) of pharmaceuticals is now illegal in all developed countries with the exceptions of the United States and New Zealand. Unfortunately, the same laws aren't practiced elsewhere in the world. Wonder who "they" would get nowadays to push the H1N1 flu shot in an ad blitz?
Sarcasm aside, it was definitely an informative exhibit with beautiful artwork and font usage (packaging sure has changed over the decades!) that is on until October 31st if you happen to be in the area.
