Billings Estate Museum
Today we visited an old homestead that was built in 1827 by pioneers Braddish and Lamira Billings in the community of Gloucester. Obviously the family was quite well-off and it was once known to be "the finest house on the south side of the Ottawa River" back in the day. On the ground there includes the main house, a smoke house, a gate house, an icehouse, a few other out buildings (the barn burned down in 1964) and most interestingly, a cemetery. Due to vandalism the headstones were removed from the original resting places and are now on display in a garage nearer the main house. But that's another post!:) The quilt shown here is a beautiful composition detailing the life and times of the five generations of Billings , who – until 1975 – who lived, laughed and loved in this well maintained New England-style home.
