Gay Pare
At least this is the name of the closest-looking peony variety I could find to match my own photo from the other day: a showy, two-tone version – Gay Pare. Did you know that peonies are the longest lived of any herbaceous perennial? This means that certain varieties have been around for generations, and in fact, once settled into a new home, a peony plant can live happily and give off blooms for over 100 years! Considering the age of the neighbourhood we were in, I wouldn't be surprised if this peony had been around for many generations already. If you are looking for information on this hardy flower, check out the Canadian Peony Society website: http://www.peony.ca/
