École Normale
Normal School? hmmm..... Never knew there was such a thing, in school or in life, for that matter! Actually these beautifully carved doors lead through to what was once called École Normale Saint-Joseph in Hull, Québec just across the river from Ottawa. History states that the school was originally implemented in 1860, with teachers from the Sisters Charity of Ottawa under Elisabeth Bruyere. After a fire or two, this is the section of the building that remained. Over the years, the school has had to modify its offerings and the capacity in which it was run. Annually, 850 girls from the region have the good fortune to attend this, one of the top ranked schools in the entire province of Québec. No longer run by the Sisters, it is now called the Lsy Institution, and since 2001 has implemented a more traditional approach to education and to the running of this 150 year-old school.

Here, a 'normal' school refers to one that specializes in training teachers. Though I learned that when I was an adult already too. :)
I'm glad this part of the building was saved. The archway and stained glass windows are beautiful!
