Living Culture in the Making
Remember the plaque from yesterday's post? This is the remainder of the Standard Bread building on which the plaque was set, way back in 1924. Since 1992, the Enriched Bread Artists – a collective of diverse local artists – have made use of the space and it is now the largest artist studio co-op in the Ottawa region. One of the collective artists wrote, "...art, like bread, sustains and stimulates society", so being based in the former bread factory makes perfect sense. It's unfortunate I missed it this past year, but when October rolls around, I will be sure to attend their annual Open House so I can take a gander at the interior. Incidentally, way up on the third floor of the building hay used to be stored for the horses that would deliver the bread each day. Bonne weekend, everyone!
