'The King of the Gatineau's' home
Not far off of Sussex Drive where many Embassies are. stands this humble abode that once was gifted to one of Ottawa's most memorable Mayors, Samuel Bingham. Born in Ottawa in 1846, a lumber baron first and a politician second, he was of upstanding character and was generous in the community. An example of this was when Bingham used his own financial means to complete a bridge project. It was supposed to be called Bingham Bridge, but locals tossed the signs into the river; to this day it is called Cummings Bridge. It is unfortunate that someone's legacy can be wiped away by merely taking down a sign or two. Fortunately (and quite obviously), the present homeowner respects the history of the place.
Just to note, that the nickname 'King of the Gatineau' came from Bingham's commitment to logging, as he continued to work full time at the mill even while officially acting as Mayor.
